Names to watch for from Seahawks preseason and training camp

Seattle, WA - This years Seattle Seahawks roster will look much different than it has in past years, primarily due to the losses of Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner. Losing excellence like that on both ends of the ball is difficult, and trying to fill the shoes of franchise legends like that is near impossible. At the quarterback spot, Geno Smith has just been named starting quarterback of the team. Drew Lock had a tough final preseason game, as the stats read three interceptions. Not all of those were his fault, and we may see Lock starting a few weeks into the regular season. Until that moment, here are some other players on the 2022 Seahawks roster to monitor this season.

Offensive

  • Deejay Dallas: We can go back to the first retirement of Marshawn Lynch for this issue, but in the last few years it has been slightly frustrating for Seattle when it comes to consistency at the running back position. With injuries to the running back room this preseason (Kenneth Walker III sports hernia, Rashaad Penny groin injury and COVID), Deejay Dallas has really taken over the starting role and embraced the situation that has presented itself.

  • Bo Melton: With the first two spots on the Seahawks wide receiver depth chart taken by DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, that third spot is a very intriguing one. There have been great reports of veteran Marquise Goodwin in Seattle camp, and he may be your initial option for the third spot. Dee Eskridge has not done much to earn the spot. Melton has made some highlight plays, leading the team in receiving yards against Pittsburgh and staying present in the offensive game plan the rest of the preseason. We could see Melton making plays sooner rather than later in this Seahawks offense if he can work his way on to the depth chart.

  • Drew Lock: I simply will not give up on Lock. Reports out of Denver said that Lock never got his fair shot under center. Lock has made highlight reel plays, including the touchdown against the Cowboys to Penny Hart. Is he a polished quarterback? No. Does he provide more of a playmaking option than Smith does? Yes, yes he does. I would expect that with more time to get fully enveloped in the Seahawks system, that we see Lock a few weeks into the regular season.

Defensive

  • Myles Adams: Defensive tackle Myles Adams has made his mark on the preseason game plan several times, and has brought valuable pass rush. As a defensive tackle in a 3-4 defense, usually you would see run stuffing and lane clogging, not necessarily pass rush. Adams has been able to get after the quarterback, and could fight his way up the nose tackle ranks behind Poona Ford and Al Woods. That third defensive tackle spot is a little bit open, considering that there was no consistent presence there last season.

  • L.J. Collier: Collier is an interesting case, and there may be some more pressure on him to perform than some of the other names on this list. While Collier didn't record a stat in the preseason, there is big opportunity for him to really live up to his first round pick label. Injuries and being a healthy scratch have led to Collier losing favor with fans, but for him to still be in the organization must say something. The Seahawks have been looking for pass rush presence for years, and even getting a start from Collier would help this defense.

  • Mike Jackson: The cornerback spot is another intriguing one, as there are a mixture of veterans and younger players battling for roster spots. Artie Burns is familiar with new staff here in Seattle, Justin Coleman had a career year with the Seahawks, Sidney Jones IV returns for another year in the 206. Coby Bryant and Tarik Woolen have emerged through camp, looking to push the veterans. With that being said, Jackson has made an impact in the preseason with pass breakups and showing up in the tackle department.
