Suarez, Kelenic, Toro homer as Mariners open series with win over Rangers

Seattle, WA – The Seattle Mariners defeated the Texas Rangers 6-2 in their April 19th matchup. The Mariners won their first game of the season against the Rangers behind three homers, by Jarred Kelenic, Eugenio Suarez, and Abraham Toro. Starting pitcher Robbie Ray went six innings, allowing four hits and giving up two earned runs. The Seattle bullpen was able to hold down the fort, going three scoreless innings between Drew Steckenrider, Paul Sewald, and Diego Castillo.

Making the most of their hits

The Mariners only recorded seven hits on the night, but three of them would be home runs. Eugenio Suarez and Jarred Kelenic were able to jump on Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray, as Suarez hit a three-run blast to center field in the first inning while Kelenic’s solo shot hit the right foul pole in the second inning. This is a series against a Texas team that has several holes, and one of those holes is their rotation. The Mariners jumped all over Gray, something they were supposed to do.

Flexing their bullpen muscle

As has been said multiple times since the 2021 season (and even during it), a huge strength for Seattle was its bullpen. Three of the Mariners’ top arms out of the pen made one inning outings in this win for Seattle, as the trio of Steckenrider-Sewald-Castillo allowed only two hits. Both Sewald and Steckenrider keep their 0.00ERA intact, while Castillo’s sits at 1.80. While these are the Mariners top options, things should get better for Seattle when they get Sergio Romo and Ken Giles back from the injured list.

The Mariners move to a 6-5 record on the season and sit at third in the AL West. Game two of this three game series against the Rangers takes place at T-Mobile Park with a 6:40PM PST first pitch. Logan Gilbert (1-0 record, 0.90ERA) will be on the mound for the Mariners, and Dane Dunning (0-0 record, 5.19ERA) will get the start for the Rangers.
