Gilbert dazzles in Mariners 4-2 win over Rangers

Seattle, WA - The Seattle Mariners took their first series win over the Texas Rangers this season in a 4-2 victory on April 20th, 2022. Starting pitcher Logan Gilbert was once again solid in his start, throwing 6.2 innings while only allowing six hits, no earned runs or walks, and four strikeouts. With tonight's start, Gilbert's ERA now leads Major League Baseball at 0.54. Gilbert has only allowed one earned run in 16.2 innings pitched. On a somewhat comical note, the Mariners lined into their first triple play since 2006. Texas turned that triple play in the bottom of the first inning.

Frazier continues to sizzle from the leadoff spot

Adam Frazier had a rough first few games to begin his tenure as a Mariner, but some other notable names didn't start off "hot" either. A simple breakdown of Frazier's batting average on the road compared to at home tells the story of the season for him so far. On the road (series' against Twins and White Sox), Frazier was hitting at an average of .133. At home, in the series against Houston and now first two games against the Rangers, Frazier has turned things around to a .440 average. An All-star last year in a season he spent with the Pirates and then Padres, there was hope that Seattle will could acquire another infielder and essentially have Frazier be super-utility. If the second baseman can keep his average at a steady pace while playing decent defense, the Mariners infield will be very good.

Gilbert continues hot start to season

Logan Gilbert had some solid starts last season, including a start against the New York Yankees where Gilbert only allowed two hits. A main issue for Gilbert was that he relied too much on his fastball, throwing it nearly 60% of the time in his 2021 campaign. While the young starter almost had that same issue in his first start of the season, it seemed like he was able to flick the mental switch midway through, and got to his off-speed pitches that he had worked on in the offseason. Gilbert is one of the young arms in the Mariners organization that highlights the future of starting pitching, and if he can continue to give Seattle quality outings, the Mariners will have an exciting one-two punch at the top of the rotation.

Seattle will look to get the series sweep against the Texas Rangers when they take them on with a 6:40PM PST first pitch on April 21st, at T-Mobile Park. Marco Gonzales (1-1, 3.00ERA in 9IP) will get the start for the Mariners, while Taylor Hearn (0-1, 4.70ERA in 7.2IP) gets the ball for the Rangers.
